Celebrate Memorial Day in EdinburghAll American conference attendees are invited to the Scottish American Memorial Day Service in Princes Street Gardens West in Edinburgh. The annual service will be held at “The Call”, the monument to the Scottish-American soldiers of World War I, on Monday 29th May 2006 at midday. The half hour service, held every Memorial Day since 1942, commemorates the links between Scotland and America. The Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the US consul, a minister from the Scottish Executive and representatives of the British and American military will all be present. The service is organised by the English Speaking Union Scotland who will be hosting a luncheon afterwards. The English Speaking Union Scotland was set up to promote the effective use of spoken English and to further international understanding. Its programme includes scholarships, schools debating competitions and the Scottish American Memorial Day Service. A memorial to Scottish soldiers who fought in the Union Army can be found in Old Calton Cemetery, Waterloo Place. The 16 foot bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln was unveiled in 1893 and marks the burial place for Scottish soldiers of the American Civil War. It is the first monument in Europe to an American President and the only Civil War memorial outside the US. All News Stories
