WWW7 Awards Descriptions

WWW7 BEST PAPER AWARD

The WWW7 Awards Subcommittee has selected a Best Paper from the 54 papers presented at the conference. The Best Paper was selected on the following criteria:

technical quality
Web community relevance
presentation at the conference

After studying the comments of the paper reviewers the Subcommittee attended their highest-rated papers and constructed a short-list. The final three papers on the shortlist were

"Automated link generation: can we do better than term repetition?" by S J Green
"Distributed 3D audio rendering" by C Low and L Babarit
"The Interactive Multimedia Jukebox" by K C Almeroth and M H Ammar

The Subcommittee selected "The Interactive Multimedia Jukebox" by K C Almeroth and M H Ammar as the best paper. The prize, donated by the WWW8 Committee, is a passport registration to WWW8 in Toronto, plus an honorarium of $200 US donated by IBM.

IBM JAVA BRAINWAVE AWARD

For the first time this year, there is a prize for the best idea presented at the conference using Java. Recognising the strong links in the conference subject matter between the academic and the commercial, the Award is for the idea most likely to suceed if commercialised.
The Award is presented to Julie Gibson and Philip Rutherford for their poster "Learners are Teachers Too in our Virtual Classroom". They have used Java at the server in a way that potentially adds value not only in their chosen field but also in a wide range of other potential contexts.
Their prize, provided by IBM, is a letter of introduction to Ted Schlein, manager of the Java Fund at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers in Silicon Valley, California, plus an honorarium of $1,600 US to assist with the visit.

WWW7 BEST POSTER AWARD

Because posters are inherently a presentation medium, delegates at the conference were invited to vote for the poster they believed was best presented. Votes were spread over a wide range of papers, and the presenters are to be congratulated on the generally high quality.
The most votes were cast for Poster 38,"Task-Based Learning Environments in a Virtual University", presented by Dave Whittington and Lorna Campbell. The prize, donated by the WWW8 Committee, is a passport registration to WWW8 in Toronto, plus an honorarium of $200 US donated by IBM.

WWW7 DOOR PRIZE

The Door Prize was awarded at random to a delegate who had voted in the ballot for the best poster. The prize was a coffee table book about Australia.
