The Web as an Ideal Interface to Ensure Accessibility in Different ICT Environments

Abstract: Nowadays, digital services tend to allow users to access information in a remote way and from different devices. Fields such as domotic or telecare applications are evolving to this model, for example, it is already possible to take control of our home from a computer in our office or from a mobile phone. These technological developments benefit many users, (i.e. senior citizen and disabled people), so they are able to overcome the barriers caused by their functional diversity. Moreover, there are guidelines that establish the basis for designing different technological applications. In the Internet field, W3C has developed the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) that are the basic reference in the production of national and international standards and laws. The combination of accessible and usable user interfaces with communication interoperability between the user personal device and the target device solves many of the barriers people find in their daily life.

Patents for Software? Is your Invention Patentable?

Abstract: The core activity of the European Patent Office (EPO) is the examination of patent applications with a view to granting a European patent. Like all other inventions, computer-implemented inventions are patentable only if they have technical character (i.e. solve a technical problem), are new and involve an inventive technical contribution to the prior art. The EPO does not grant patents for computer programs ("software patents") or computer-implemented business methods that make no such technical contribution. The EPO is bound by European patent law. Our expert will guide you through the technicalities of patenting computer-implemented inventions.

Innovation in the Wild, Wild Web

Abstract: Behind many innovations in technology are the efforts of wild-eyed enthusiasts who set out to explore its possible uses. From the development of the first personal computers to the development of the Web, and its re-emergence as Web 2.0, small groups of enthusiasts have led the way. More often than not, they've been way ahead of commercial and academic organizations in discovering the potential for a new technology. So, when enthusiasts begin to explore and play with a new technology, we've learned at O'Reilly to take that as an early warning sign that the technology deserves serious consideration. O'Reilly has built a publishing company around following the work of such enthusiasts, whom we also call alpha geeks, and helping to spread their knowledge more widely. The emergence of the Maker movement is an example of innovation in the wild, just like the early Web, where a group of enthusiasts are tinkering with physical things and creating new, smart objects. They are using sensors, data loggers, and open source hardware to develop new ways of interacting with the world.
