Welcome to the WWW2002 conference volunteers FAQ page. This is the place to find quick answers to some important questions regarding volunteering for WWW2002. New information will be updated periodically.

Who are Volunteers?

Volunteers typically are people with an involvement in the World Wide Web, who are interested in experiencing the conference but otherwise, could not afford to attend. There are two types of volunteers (Technical and Student), so please be that sure you apply for the proper volunteer category.

Technical Volunteers will report to the WWW2002 Technical Volunteers Chair. We are looking for people with a background in building and running networks and or associated Audiovisual technology.

Student Volunteers will report to the Pacific Telecommunnications Council (PTC) staff. We are looking for willing and energetic students for a variety of non-technical duties.

What can I expect to do at the conference?

Technical Volunteer
The program has evolved a lot over the last 10 conferences and the volunteer role is now defined as technical support. This means that you will be expected to have knowledge or experience in building and running a large distributed network to supply connectivity for the conference. We are also looking for people to set up and operate the specialized AV equipment that a conference of this type requires.

Student (PTC) Volunteer
The student volunteers are subject to do various duties that include:

• Registration Packet Preparation
• Registration Desk
• Room Monitors
• Replenish and Maintain Literature Bins
• Social Events Assistance
• Floater

Note: Even though you are scheduled to certain duty at a certain time, any WWW2002/PTC Staff member may ask you to do something else. You are responsible to review the information that is given to you and you should have a good understanding of the venue, program, services, etc.

What qualifications do I need?

Technical Volunteer
You don't have to be an expert! Students and enthusiasts work alongside industry professionals. Enthusiasm and interest are important qualities. There are usually more applicants than positions so make sure you use the spaces provided in the registration form to tell us as much about yourself as possible. You must have a good attitude and an interest in the web but you definitely don't need a degree in computer science. The conference is a great place to learn more about web development and authoring but this kind of experience is not particularly relevant to volunteering. We are about Routers and IP addresses, not HTML and XML.

Student (PTC) Volunteer
No specific experience is necessary but you must be a full-time student to qualify. Volunteers are needed in various areas from Sunday, 5 May till Saturday, 11 May 2002. Volunteer times start on some days as early as 0700 and end as late as 2100 on other days.

What do I get?

Technical Volunteer
Volunteer benefits includes the conference program, CD-ROM, selected conference memorabilia items and access to all the days of the conference including coffee breaks and lunches. You will be required to work 25 hours in exchange. There will be a flexible roster system that will allow you to schedule your work commitments between attending the parts of the conference that interest you.

Student (PTC) Volunteer
Volunteer benefits includes the conference program, CD-ROM, and access to all to all days of the conference. Student volunteers are required to work 16 hours for full conference access.
