5 Field Test: VROOM, SIGGRAPH '94

The virtual reality exhibit VROOM at SIGGRAPH 94 provided a unique opportunity to showcase VROOM applications in Mosaic and test CAVEview on a broad spectrum of users. Over 20 CAVE applications were featured in CAVEview including Interactive Molecular Modeling, A Walk Through the Chesapeake Bay, A 3D Model of the Heart, Parallel Real Time Radiosity, and Getting Physical in 4D. Seven SGI Indigo 2 Extremes and three Indigo Elans were used to run the Mosaic Based documentation. Workstations were linked via a local area network that allowed access to VROOM documentation only. This documentation included CAVEview simulations, animations, and text. Each of the medias described the projects and served as a supplement to the actual CAVE experience. Unlike the VROOM CAVE experience, where there is one navigator and many passive viewers, CAVEview allows the user direct control over navigation, wand input and length of interaction. Moreover, CAVEview allowed the user to view any number of the VROOM applications. Overall the CAVEview user interface proved quite intuitive and did not require additional instructions or assistance other than those provided in the documents themselves.
