                           Volunteer Newsletter #3 1 / 16 / 98
Hi everyone, hope you all had a good Christmas New Year. I have to apologise for the delays in getting the registration form working. There have been a few bugs that had to be fixed and the holidays stalled things for a while. The form has been up for a week however has still not been working. This has been fixed and I can guarantee that it is now fully functional. If you submitted a form before 1 / 15 / 98 then you may need to send it again. So far I have received registrations from Petros Malecos, Cherie Welch, David Robinson and Eduardo Wiewall so if you are not one of these people and have sent a form I don't have it. Sorry about the inconvenience and no, this is not a test of your enthusiasm. Organising an International event by remote control can be problematic.

We are close to finalising the conference program and the volunteers work schedule is emerging from this. One particular challenge we have to deal with is that the conference begins immeadiately after the Easter holiday. This poses a few scheduling problems as access to BCEC will be limited. We will not be requiring any volunteers untill Monday 13th April. The main conference set up will be on Tuesday. Accomodation will be available before this time so if you are coming from overseas and want to check in earlier let us now when you receive your acceptance form. We will be paying for your accomodation from Monday night, so if you want to arrive earlier you can either pay for extra nights ( $AU35 per night including Breakfast ) or we can give you some extra hours to work during the conference, I will be needing a few people to help set up for tutorials on Monday.

Bad news for Australia but good news for visitors from USA and Europe is the currency rates. The Aussie Dollar has dropped a lot recently and is currently running at 65 cents to the US Dollar so you will get a really good conversion when you arrive. $AU35 converts to about $US23.

The first batch of acceptances will go out during the first week of Febuary. The next newsletter will be online the same time. I expect to notify all successful applicants by mid Febuary, I do not expect the registration form to be up after then. Most of you should know if you have a position by 2/16/98.

The next newsletter will have more details of what will be required of volunteers and the work schedule. Most shifts will run in 5 hour blocks and will be interchangeable to maximise your opportunities to attend whatever parts of the conference you want to. A full registration and accomodation Monday to Saturday will require you to work 35 hours. This will be scaleable to allow for those who want more or less accomodation, don't need registration etc. The peak demand will be Tuesday and Thursday night so many of you will be able to concentrate your hours into these times and allow time off during the conference.

Once again, sorry about the registration gliches, check back here for the next newsletter first week of Febuary and keep checking the program pages on the conference web site, the program is getting close to being finalised. The acceptance form we send you will give you the opportunity to say what times you want off so it's important to familiarise yourself with the conference content before you accept.

Talk to you soon,

John Miller
