Keynote Address
Paul holds a B.A. from Harvard College, an LL.B from Cambridge University, and a J.D. from Stanford Law School. At Stanford, he was Editor-in-Chief of the Stanford Journal of International Law. Prior to joining IFTF in 1985, Paul practiced law in Silicon Valley, specializing in technology and venture capital matters. He is a member of the New York and California Bars. |

OzEmail is Australia's largest Internet Service Provider, and the leading developer of internet technology in Australia. Michael has been with OzEmail since October 1996 as their Vice President of Corporate Relations. For most of 1996 he lived in Amsterdam where his wife was working for Greenpeace International. Over the previous 2 years he led the Australian Republican Movement (ARM) as its Executive Director. The ARM is a non-profit company supported by membership subscriptions and personal donations. The previous ten years he focussed on the development and implementation of information, education and communication programs, firstly in Victoria for 3 years and then in New South Wales from 1989 as Manager of the State's Health Promotion Unit. The New South Wales Health Promotion Program is the largest health promotion program in Australia, employing some 340 staff, and in 1993/94 allocating $AUS28M for programs to promote health. Following their return to Australia last year and the birth of their first child, Michael looked to the emerging Internet as an exciting place for employment |

Keynote Address
The presentation first introduces the history of Internet development in China, with the focus on the role the Web has played. Then some technical issues are discussed including the use of the Chinese language, the Chinese search engines, the Web based remote education system. A comprehensive picture of homepage statistics in China is then presented. Finally, the Web business model in China is analysed. |

John Swinson is a senior associate at the Australian law firm, Mallesons Stephen Jaques. John is licensed to practise law in both Australia and New York. From 1991-1996, John worked as an intellectual property lawyer in "silicon alley" in Manhattan, representing a number of Internet companies, software developers and financial institutions. John has degrees in computer science and law from the University of Queensland, and a master of law degree from Harvard Law School where he studied on a Fulbright Fellowship. John has spoken at numerous conferences on Internet legal issues.
He is a member of the Computer Law Association, the American Intellectual
Property Law Association, the Society for Computers and the Law, and the
American Bar Association.

Keynote Address
Formally a public servant, high school teacher, lawyer, arts administrator and university lecturer, he has worked extensively in radio and television. He was a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO in Paris (1991-95), Vice President of the World Heritage Commission (1995-96), a consultant for OECD and honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Wollongong and the Victoria University of Technology. His best known book "Sleeper, Wake!: Technology and the Future of Work" is now in its 21st impression, having been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Swedish and braille. |
