WWW7 Virtual Edition - 8:15 pm Thursday 16th April
1998
Delegates to the WWW7 conference tonight threw down the
gauntlet
to the rest of the world, by setting a world record for
the largest
number of users connected to the internet at a single
internet cafe.
At 8:15pm, Dan Crawford from KPMG - the official auditor
of the
World Record Attempt - announced that 172 connections
had been
completed.
Both Barry Conyngham - Chair of the WWW7 Consortium Executive
-
and Allan Ellis - WWW7 Conference Chair joined in the
action
on their Mac Powerbooks.
Other users made use of the 100 Sun Microsystems workstations
in the Internet Cafe to participate in the attempt.
And a varied collection of laptops, palmtops and IBM
pc's
finished out the set.
It was not just an attempt for computer boffins, but
more like a family night out, with young and old alike
joining in the fun.
and finally we reached connection number "172"
Now its time to P ... A ... R ... T ... Y
