Keynote Address 
  • Paul Saffo -  Director, Institute for the Future 
Paul is a specialist in the long-term social and commercial impacts of new information technologies. In his spare time, Paul also writes on emerging technology issues and their long-term implications. He has contributed an occasional column to Wired, and his essays have appeared in a variety of publications, including The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Fortune, Byte, PC Computing, and Infoworld. A book of Paul's essays, Dreams in Silicon Valley, is available in Japan. 

Paul holds a B.A. from Harvard College, an LL.B from Cambridge University, and a J.D. from Stanford Law School. At Stanford, he was Editor-in-Chief of the Stanford Journal of International Law. Prior to joining IFTF in 1985, Paul practiced law in Silicon Valley, specializing in technology and venture capital matters. He is a member of the New York and California Bars.

  • Michael Ward - Ozemail 
The future of Internet technologies and their significance for Business  

OzEmail is Australia's largest Internet Service Provider, and the leading developer of internet technology in Australia.  Michael has been with OzEmail since October 1996 as their Vice President of  Corporate Relations. For most of 1996 he lived in Amsterdam where his wife was working for Greenpeace International.  Over  the previous 2 years he led the Australian Republican  Movement (ARM) as its Executive Director.  The ARM is a non-profit company supported by membership subscriptions and personal donations. 

The previous ten years he focussed on the development and implementation of information, education and communication programs, firstly in Victoria for 3 years and then in New South Wales from 1989 as Manager of the State's Health Promotion Unit.  The New South Wales Health Promotion Program is the largest health promotion program in Australia, employing some 340 staff, and in 1993/94 allocating $AUS28M for programs to promote health. 

Following their return to Australia last year and the birth of their first child, Michael looked to the emerging Internet as an exciting place for employment

  • Professor Bill Caelli - Head of the IT Security Centre at the Queensland University of Technology
Prof. Bill Caelli is a renowned international expert in technical, social and policy issues relating to computer network security.  Numerous accolades for his work include "Computer World Fellow" in 1996, "Pioneer of the 
Computer Industry" for Australia in 1993, "International Federation for Information Processing Silver Core Award" in 1992 and "Australian Information Technology Award for Achievement" in 1986.  Bill is a down-to-earth, lively and engaging speaker who always confronts key issues 
facing the information industries. 
 
  • Mr Dennis Viehland - Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand
Dennis Viehland is a Senior Lecturer in Information Systems at Massey University's Albany campus. Dr. Viehland is an internationally recognised speaker on electronic commerce and the use of the Internet. His list of education and consulting clients include the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand, Fletcher Challenge, New Zealand Dairy Foods, and 
universities, institutes, and other business organisations in New Zealand, Australia, America and Singapore. His dynamic presentation style and his years of Internet experience combine to make his courses and seminars interesting and relevant to his audience.

  • Xing Li - Professor of the Electronic Engineering Department of Tsinghua University, Deputy Director of China Education and Research Network (CERNET) Center
          The Web in China: Past, Present and Future  

The presentation first introduces the history of Internet development in China, with the focus on the role the Web has played. Then some technical issues are discussed including the use of the Chinese language, the Chinese search engines, the Web based remote education system. A comprehensive picture of homepage statistics in China is then presented. Finally, the Web business model in China is analysed.

  • John Swinson -  Mallesons Stephen Jaques Solicitors 
          Intellectual Property in Cyberspace  

John Swinson is a senior associate at the Australian law firm, Mallesons Stephen Jaques.  John is licensed to practise law in both Australia and New York.  From 1991-1996, John worked as an intellectual property lawyer in "silicon alley" in Manhattan, representing a number of Internet companies, software developers and financial institutions. 

John has degrees in computer science and law from the University of Queensland, and a master of law degree from Harvard Law School where he studied on a Fulbright Fellowship. 

John has spoken at numerous conferences on Internet legal issues.  He is a member of the Computer Law Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Society for Computers and the Law, and the American Bar Association.

  • Eric Halil, Technical Manger, AUSCERT

Eric has eight years experience in the information technology industry
specialising in computer systems security and system administration.  He has contracted to a number of commercial organisations providing technical consultation in security and network administration.  His experiences range from assisting sites with computer security issues and analysis of computer security vulnerabilities to the implementation of computer security systems designed to prevent intrusion.  His experience within AUSCERT places him in a unique position to analyse and present trends in computer security incidents on the Internet in Australia.

The Australian Computer Emergency Response Team (AUSCERT) provides a single, trusted point of contact in Australia for the Internet community to deal with computer security incidents and their prevention.  AUSCERT's aims are to reduce the probability of successful attack, to reduce the direct costs of security to organisations and lower the risk of consequential damage.  AUSCERT is a full member of the international Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams, FIRST.

Keynote Address 
  • Barry Jones -  National President of the Australian Labor Party 
Barry is a politician, writer and broadcaster and currently National President of the Australian Labor Party. He has been the Federal Member for Labor since 1977. He was Minister for Science from 1983 to 1990 and was created an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1993. He enjoys the rare distinction of having been elected as a Fellow of three Australian Academies - Science (1996), the Humanities (1993) and Technology, Science and Engineering (1992). 

Formally a public servant, high school teacher, lawyer, arts administrator and university lecturer, he has worked extensively in radio and television. He was a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO in Paris (1991-95), Vice President of the World Heritage Commission (1995-96), a consultant for OECD and honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Wollongong and the Victoria University of Technology. 

His best known book "Sleeper, Wake!: Technology and the Future of Work" is now in its 21st impression, having been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Swedish and braille.
