Although the National Information Infrastructure (NII) is primarily a private sector initiative, state and local government can work together to create a public policy and regulatory climate that allows the NII to thrive. This session will demonstrate the City of San Jose Web Page Desability Access Design Standards and tell the story about why the eleventh largest city in the United States was selected as a model city by the federal government and featured as the technology bridge during President Clinton's 1997 Inauguration activities. Cynthia D. Waddell, Americans with Disabilities Coordinator, will present an overview of the City of San Jose Web Page and demonstrate how Universal Design principles can not only provide improved access to government services and programs but can also promote electronic commerce in the business networking community. The presentation will include information about the high demand and usage of internet terminals at City of San Jose libraries as well as some of the educational, governmental, business, multicultural and employment resources available on the City web site.
