Steven J. DeRose received his Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics from Brown University in 1989. He has consulted extensively in computational linguistics, hypermedia, SGML, and related fields. He directed the FRESS hypertext project at Brown University from 1979-1982, and contributed to the CDWord biblical hypertext project. He has published, spoken, and taught on descriptive markup, hypertext, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, and other topics, and co-authored with David Durand the book *Making Hypermedia Work: A User's guide to HyTime*. He is co-founder and Senior System Architect at Electronic Book Technologies, which develops DynaText(tm), the leading system for online delivery of SGML-based hyperdocuments. He is very active in standards, including ANSI, ISO, the Text Encoding Initiative, and others. He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Association for Computational Linguistics, and Phi Beta Kappa.
