Tutorial 10: Harnessing the Power of the Web
Presenter: Alan Richmond, CyberWeb SoftWare
Half-day tutorial on Monday, April 10, 1995
2:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: 31/0012
Description of Tutorial:
This tutorial will include:
- Advanced HTML and Forms:
- We will offer an advanced survey of HTML, especially the forms
feature, which interacts with CGI (the Common Gateway Interface).
- Introduction to the HyperText Transfer Protocol:
- We'll take a brief overview of HTTP, to help you understand how
HTML forms communicate with CGI.
- Interfacing Computer-Based Resources to the WWW:
- The CGI is the connection between HTML forms and the software you
want to use behind them, e.g. database queries. We'll study how to
do input and output to/from CGI programs, with some examples.
- Harnessing the Web's Power: Web Searchable Databases.
- We'll see how to make use of HTML forms, processed by CGI scripts
and programs, to connect these forms to databases ranging from very
simple tabular searches through to more complex relational databases.
Who should attend:
This half day tutorial is not aimed at the newcomer to the WWW,
so much as towards those Web application developers contemplating
setting up HTML forms, databases, or information systems on the
WWW. The participant should have some knowledge of HTML, and
ideally should also have some knowledge of programming.
