Abstract:
In April 1994 a provisional cache server for German universities was installed in Frankfurt. Seven universities are currently participating. Statistics are presented and experiences are discussed.
Keywords:
Cache Server, Caching
Inspired by the presentation of Neil Smith at WWW94 [Smith94], a central Cache Server [luotonen94] for for German Science Institutes was suggested by Heinrich Stamerjohanns. The facilities were provided by the RBI in course of an internal project at the Department of Computer Science, University of Frankfurt, where Jens Kurlanda volunteered for maintenance of that Server. Seven universities are currently connected through their university-wide cache server. In our poster we will show collected statistics of the use of the central server, including hit rates and correlated hits between local and central caches. We will also discuss usefulness of central caches and suggest locations for much more effective caching (e.g. US-Gate Germany-USA).
