Social networks
Social networks and social media have rapidly become the fastest growing component of the Web, from both usage and research perspectives, as they have lowered the barrier of access for production and consumption of online information, as well as for Web-based interactions among people. Social networks and social media have generalized the key concept of the Web – the hyperlink – to links between people, objects, information, and annotations. As a result, we are discovering ways to leverage links for asking new kinds of questions and building new kinds of systems. The social networks track of WWW explores both analyses of social networks and social media to better understand how these systems work and how people use them, and design and development of theories, algorithms, and techniques to make these systems more effective and to leverage social interaction in new Web application domains.
