Impact of the Web on Health and Society

The final themed day of the conference will focus on the repercussions of the Web on the world at large. Our invited speakers and related tracks will tackle the revolutionary impact of the Web on either health or society.

Speaker sessions - Health

Delegates will hear speeches on patient confidentiality, the impact of the semantic Web on healthcare and the use and management of healthcare information via the Internet.

Sir Michael Rawlins, Chairman of the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, examines how the traditional relationship between health professionals and the general public has evolved and, in part, eroded thanks to the web.

Alan Rector, Professor of Medical Informatics at the University of Manchester, probes the potential of the Semantic Web as an aid to clinical and bioscientific research.

The Internet can be a useful tool for disseminating vital health information but it can also broadcast dangerous disinformation. How does the public tell the difference and how do the information owners get their message across? Celia Boyer, executive director of the Health on the Net Foundation, promotes the deployment of useful and reliable online medical and health information.

Paper tracks

The medical theme continues through the W3C tracks with topics tackling the role of technology in the flow of healthcare innovation, the development of semantic Web rules and social information spaces, and internationalisation techniques.
