Roll over Napster and make way for Learnster. With the growth of learning objects available through the World Wide Web and the emergence of new internationally recognized metadata specifications, the peer-to-peer exchange of lessons and courses by learners, instructors, and course developers is becoming possible. Learning objects and metadata specifications promote seamless access to a vast store of "learning objects" such as animations, videos, simulations, educational games, and multimedia texts in the same way that Napster users have access to music files.

An online learning object can be any digital item , which can be used or referenced in technology-supported learning. They are modular units comparable to Lego blocks that can be assembled together to form lessons and courses. An online learning object can be a simple electronic text, a .gif graphic image, a Quicktime movie, a Java applet or any other electronic entity that can be employed in a learning context. Metadata is essential for searching repositories of learning objects. Metadata is often described as being "data about data". It facilitates the exchange and interoperability of learning objects.

The EDUCATION track encourages contributions on learning objects, metadata and other related aspects of online learning that are of importance and interest to a wider audience.
