Manchester United hero Eric Cantona
shocked English football by announcing his retirement from the game yesterday.
The decision was revealed by the United chairman, Martin Edwards, at a
hastily convened press conference just a week after the French striker celebrated winning
his fourth Premier League title with the English giants.
The controversial 30 year old, once banned for eight months for
attacking a fan, has been the key player in United's domination of English football since
his transfer from Leeds in 1992.

"I have played football for 13
years, which is a long time," he said. " I now wish to do other things.
"I have always planned to retire when I was at the top and at
Manchester United I have reached the pinnacle of my career.
"In the last four and a half years I have enjoyed my best football
and had a wonderful time.
"I have had a marvellous relationship with the coach, manager,
staff, players and not least the fans.
"I wish Manchester United even more success in the future."
