4.2 - Distributed naming service

WebLinker uses files associated with each infostructure to store LIN to LRN mappings. The problem with this is that if a remote infostructure moves to a different server, then the LRN for the infostructure cannot be resolved. The remote maintainer must have some method by which he can tell everyone linked to that infostructure that it has moved. This can be done by having a central repository holding all LIN to LRN mappings.

Work in trying to devise a general naming scheme for internet accessible resources is being done under the umbrella of the URI (Universal Resource Indicator) working group of the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). They have published several Internet drafts including ones detailing functional requirements for such a naming scheme.

WebLinker will have the capability to use such a scheme once it has been finalised. In the meantime, there are some trial implementations of such schemes being worked on. We do not see WebLinker providing yet another naming scheme implementation, but instead being able to work within the context of any such scheme.
