Keith Willard MD, MSEE

Associate Director of Laboratory Information Systems and Technical Director of the Medical Decision Support Group at the University of Minnesota Hospital. He is also Assistant Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Minnesota. Education experiences include undergraduate training in electrical engineering from Walla Walla College, graduate work in electrical engineering from Stanford University, medical training from Loma Linda University and the University of Minnesota, and a fellowship in health informatics from the National Library of Medicine. Prior research interests include application of Monte Carlo simulation techniques to medical decision making and automation in the clinical microbiology laboratory. Current research includes the development of the Clinical Workstation (CWS) project at the University with the goal of embedding active clinical practice guidelines into the ordinary daily workflow of clinicians in the hospital and outpatient settings by creating medical information support systems that clinicians actually want to use--voluntarily.

Jeff H. Hallgren BS

Principle Information Systems Analyst/Programmer at Laboratory Information Systems, University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic. Education experiences include undergraduate training at University of Minnesota College of Biological Sciences in Botany. Experience in aspects of clinical laboratory computing over the last decade include: Project leader in the design and implementation of an HLA (Immunology) tissue typing laboratory. Designed and helped implement an HL7 based result transmission system over TCP/IP networks. Designed and implemented a distrubuted-object based HL7 messaging protocol in conjunction with the development of the NEXTSTEP based Clinical Workstation (CWS) project. General development environment experience includes unix, objective C, NEXTSTEP, SQL, Tandem, perl and WWW.


Donald Connelly, MD, PhD

is Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Minnesota Medical School and Assistant Director of the Medical Informatics Training Program there. He is Medical Director of the Laboratory Information Systems Division and the Medical Decision Support Unit at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic. His research foci for over 15 years have been on clinical decision making related to effective laboratory testing and the development of workstations which physicians and nurses willingly use in support of their patient care activities. He has published nearly 100 related articles, book chapters and abstracts and participates in special committees with the College of American Pathologists, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the American Medical Informatics Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics and has served on review committees and advisory panels for NIH and the Center for Disease Control.
