4. Where we use Mosaic [2] for LAN Management

LAN Managers must deal with large amounts of information. To make a correct diagnosis or reach a correct conclusion, it is necessary to cross-check many facts and interpretations. Hypertext may be able to improve the speed and accuracy of LAN information management. Hypertext is a way of organizing computer-based text that allows the interlinking of information. To cope with information overload we have created a LAN Management page. (Fig. 4).

Hypertext can be used in five basic modes of operation for LAN Management. These modes range from browsing to complete analysis and cross-referencing.

Browsing. Browsing is an activity associated with skimming quickly across large amounts of information looking for topics of interest.

On-line help. The help mode is a specialized subset of the referencing mode that is recognized by much smaller amounts of information provided to aid the user in his or her current task

Presentation. Presentation modes are identified by an overview provided by the system or a summary of the current subject matter.

Learning and analysis. Learning and analysis modes are used actively to solve problems, analyze information, or make decisions.

Referencing. The referencing mode is used to retrieve specific information from within the hypertext.
